Virus to Improve Solar Cell Efficiency
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discovered a method to improve the power efficiency of solar cell with the help of viruses that are designed to work at microscopic level. In a typical setup, sunlight hits a light harvesting material that would cause a release of electrons that can be harnessed to generate electric current. With the MIT research, microscopic carbon nanotubes can improve the efficiency of electron collection.
First Solar and China Power Sign Solar Power Deal
First Solar Inc. and China Power International New Energy Holding Ltd. announced that they will work on solar energy projects in the United States, China and other markets across the globe. First Solar is one of the leading U.S. solar panel manufacturers.
Solar Panels Float on Water in Northern California
You usually find solar panels mounted on top of carports, rooftops and fields but in the vineyards of Northern California, solar panels are found moored on irrigation ponds. Wineries want to go solar in this part of the state but they don’t want to pull out the vines.
Solar Panels Rise in New Jersey
New Jersey’s largest utility, Public Service Electric and Gas Company, started a solar power installation project in the state. This was met with mixed reactions from the residents. Some say they like the initiative of the utility while other residents view the solar panels as eyesores.
An Innovative Breakthrough in Solar Panel Design
Thanks to researchers at Princeton University, high costs of solar panels may no longer be an issue. Going green and harnessing the power of the sun might be easily affordable to anyone who wishes to participate in making the world a cleaner place.
Harvard Gains 500KW Solar Array
Solar energy has made its debut at Harvard University, with CarbonFree Technology, Integrys Energy Services and SunPower Corporation installing a 500-kilowatt solar array on the roof of an historic brownstone.
Suntech Deals with Ontario Solar Installer
Suntech Power has signed a deal with the Canadian solar installer Pure Energies to supply 17 megawatts worth of photovoltaic panels in 2010.
Bexley, Ohio’s New Police Station to be Powered by the Sun
Bexley’s new police station will have solar panels installed some time in the next year in connection with Ohio’s goal of having 25 alternative energy projects across the state.
Suntech Eyes Phoenix for its HQ and Plant
Chinese-owned solar panel giant Suntech has announced plans to erect its U.S. headquarters in a 100,000 square feet location in Phoenix, Arizona. The building of the site, which will also house a manufacturing plant, was announced last Monday by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer.
The Suntech Power facility is expected to be fully operational by the third quarter of 2010, creating at least 250 new green jobs in the state. Once operational, the facility will likely be the first ever company to be eligible for Arizona’s Renewable Energy Tax Incentive program. Through said program, Suntech can earn refundable tax credits and additional property tax reductions.
