Green Mountain Energy, a retail company providing electricity to Texas residents from green energy sources, offers customers who produce renewable energy from home systems a special buy-back program. The offer applies only to those customers signed up for the company’s Renewable Rewards accounts, which deliver power from 100% wind energy sources. However, home systems eligible for buy-back include tidal, solar, geothermal, biomass, hydroelectric wave, and wind power. Supported systems must have a capacity of 25 kW or less.
The Renewable Rewards Buy-Back Program is not pure net metering. Customers pay Green Mountain’s going retail rate for the power they draw off the grid during any given month. Energy produced and fed back into the grid is metered separately with the customer’s account credited the following month. There is an upper limit of 500 kWh on what the company will buy per month at the going retail rate. Above 500 kWh, the customer receives half the retail price. However, customers do hold the title to renewable energy credits or similar environmental attributes produced by their home systems.
Customers are required to complete an interconnection agreement with their electric distribution utility, not Green Mountain. It is also up to the customer to work with the utility to see that a separate meter is installed on the site with the ability to measure electrical flow in both directions. Green Mountain’s website lists contacts to arrange interconnection agreements with Oncor, CenterPoint, Texas-New Mexico Power and American Electric Power.
