We have the robot vacuum cleaner, so why not a robotic pool cleaner? Solar Breeze, the world’s only fully autonomous – and solar powered – pool cleaner received an update recently on its already fascinating features. Created by Solar Pool Technologies, Inc. , the device eliminates the annoying nuisance that is daily skimming and chlorinations so that pool owners can actually enjoy their pool!

Armed with the ability to putter endlessly around a pool and add chlorine with its built-in dispenser, the Solar Breeze has two panels in which to accumulate the sun’s energy and store in its batteries. Whereas most pool cleaning machines are stationary, the Solar Breeze is constantly moving with the solar energy it has gathered, constantly picking up debris and leaves that have fallen into the water. It works when it’s most needed – when the sun is shining bright and hot. Without the use of any cords or attachments, it can suck up to 90-95% of the waste that can turn your family pool into a bacteria trap.

Initially released two years ago, the new version is even more intelligent than the last. Software is included in the machine to smartly direct it to areas with more sun to maximize its battery life. The solar panels themselves have gotten a 300% boost in output capacity, and a brand new brushless motor has a life of 30,000 hours (or 1250 days!).

Available at the official website, this nifty little pool butler doesn’t come cheap at $499 per unit. However, as the device is fully dependent on free solar power, owners of the Solar Breeze will save up to hundreds per year on energy bills as the necessity for a pool pump lessens. Seen as an investment, it can pay for itself even after only a year of use. It’s not a tanned, nubile pool boy, but it does the job all the same – if not better.
