New Agreement Advances Green Hydrogen Plant in Western Australia

New MOU for green hydrogen production plant in WA

Infinite Green Energy (IGE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Samsung C&T to collaborate on the development and construction of the Arrowsmith Hydrogen Plant, aimed at meeting the rising demand for hydrogen in Western Australia.

Situated 30 kilometers south of Dongara, this facility, powered by wind and solar energy, is projected to generate up to 300 metric tons of green hydrogen per day, equivalent to 100,000 metric tons annually.

The primary objective of this endeavor is to establish a subsea pipeline and offshore loading facility, set to be operational by early 2028, with hydrogen production scheduled to commence in the same year. The project will also include a truck-offloading terminal, allowing IGE to supply local back-to-base operations and potentially form a Zero Emissions Highway in the future.

The Arrowsmith Hydrogen Plant design encompasses 700 megawatts (MW) of electrolysers, 750 MW of solar photovoltaics (PV), 1,550 MW of wind turbines, and 240 MW of batteries. IGE envisions the Arrowsmith facility connecting to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) from Eneabba South to Arrowsmith, with the possibility of extending the grid to Geraldton and subsequently Oakajee.

Future expansions are under consideration, with Samsung C&T expected to deliver 7 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy from Arrowsmith, including 2,100 MW of electrolysers.

Western Australian Hydrogen Industry Minister, Roger Cook, welcomed this partnership as a significant step toward Western Australia becoming a major producer, exporter, and consumer of this emerging renewable energy source.

“Partnerships like these are vital to the delivery of the 2030 vision under the Western Australian Renewable Hydrogen Strategy and future opportunities that come with it,” Mr. Cook stated.

Stephen Gauld, Managing Director and CEO of Infinite Green Energy, emphasized the importance of partnering with Samsung C&T for the flagship Arrowsmith project, which enhances the confidence of all IGE stakeholders. He noted that this partnership reflects IGE’s commitment to combat climate change and promote green energy production for the benefit of the Western Australian economy and local communities.

Peter Coleman, Chairman of Infinite Green Energy, warmly welcomed the partnership with Samsung C&T, acknowledging their knowledge, skills, and relationships that will play a crucial role in the successful development of the Arrowsmith project.

Sechul Oh, President and CEO of E&C Group at Samsung C&T, emphasized the alignment of this project with Samsung’s values and vision. He stated, “We are committed to fast-tracking the energy transition, creating opportunities for people and businesses. Production of green hydrogen is a key component of that story.”

IGE aims to become Australia’s first zero-carbon commercial hydrogen producer. The project was initiated in 2019 to serve the domestic Western Australian market, with plans to deliver up to 42 metric tons per day. However, in 2021, IGE expanded its scope to include the design concept for an export terminal and subsea pipeline for cryogenic gas. Additionally, IGE is advancing the Northam MEG HP1, another renewable hydrogen project in collaboration with Samsung C&T.
