New Solar Farm and BESS Enhance Energy Supply in WA

New BESS and solar farm now operational in WA

A new centralised solar farm and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has commenced operations in Cue, Western Australia, according to Horizon Power’s recent announcement.

Cue becomes the fourth regional Western Australian town to benefit from a centralised solar farm as part of Horizon Power’s Midwest Solar Program, following the successful implementation of similar projects in Wiluna, Yalgoo, and Sandstone.

Horizon Power is progressively installing centralised solar photovoltaics (PV) in six towns, including those in the MidWest region and Norseman in the Goldfields, to bolster renewable energy utilization in these communities.

The newly operational 259kW solar facility and 336kWh BESS unit, integrated into the 11kV network, have completed reliability testing. This endeavour is a collaboration with Pacific Energy and aligns with Horizon Power’s commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions while striving for a net-zero carbon future.

The solar farm and BESS initiative offer a sustainable and efficient alternative for communities that currently depend on diesel generators for their energy requirements. Excess electricity generated by the solar panels during the day is stored in batteries for use during nighttime or cloudy conditions, ensuring a consistent power supply even when sunlight is limited.

By generating and storing their electricity, these towns can significantly reduce their reliance on diesel generators, thereby curbing fuel expenses and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental impact associated with diesel combustion. The existing diesel infrastructure can function as a backup system.

The overall program is anticipated to curtail approximately 2,100 tons of CO2 emissions annually, resulting in an estimated yearly cost savings of $900,000, while enhancing fuel security and mitigating the effects of fuel price fluctuations.

This program, backed by $13.5 million in Commonwealth funding, contributes to the state’s efforts to decarbonize its energy sources. Similar solar and battery solutions are in the pipeline as part of the program, with Meekatharra and Norseman scheduled for implementation in early 2024.
